Matchday 4 Recap: Refusing to Quit

A day filled with adversity saw McGreevy’s Boys fall behind to the struggling Gunners in the early stages of the league tie. After a strong run of play from theGunners, a clever ball over the top a sizzling outside of the boot finish was the wake up call that SIFC needed in order to get into the game. A good spell of possession as the first half wound down culminated in a markedly composed finish from Andrew Woonton, who sided-footed a bouncing ball past the keeper from the penalty spot. It felt like it was all SIFC from there, yet the score line would take a turn for the worse.

Two unanswered Gunners goals slip in against the run of play putting SIFC down 3-1. The boys felt confident, though, and the manager made a tactical change to get more numbers forward to capitalize on the growing amount of possession. It felt it was only a matter of time before SIFC pulled one back and it was only fitting that an in form Super Marco was the one to do it. All momentum on their side, McGreevy’s boys quickly won back possession and Andrew Woonton made a scrappy challenge on a loose ball in the box that eventually squeaked out to the returning Christian Palacios who buried the equalizer.

All said and done it was great to take a point away in the fixture, but the boys will have felt it a bit unfair of a result due to having the run of play most of the game and a potentially missed offsides call on a Gunners goal. We look forward to next week against a mainstay rival Cambridge Arsenal FC. #WeGoAgain2017

Matchday 3 Recap: @ Holliston

The McGreevy’s Boys finally took 3 points from arch rivals, Holliston with a 3-0 result.  It was a complete team effort from start to finish.  It began with a solid pre-match warmup led by our man from Leicester and a big pep talk from Dr. DiFronzo, both which paid dividends right from the first whistle.

We were pinging passes all around the field and did a fantastic job attacking from the flanks. Unlike the game vs. Albania, we were more dangerous this week in the offensive third, building out of the back and keeping possession throughout the entire match. Great work everyone!

New signing Karl “Tiggs” Tegha made his SIFC debut and scored the first goal from the penalty spot after Leo Kontoes was taken down in the box on a blistering run through the defense.  Tiggs then had a nice hold up play in the far corner while waiting for the calvary to arrive and found Alex Annese at the top of the box who made a quick touch to create space and burry the second goal of the game.  On the third goal Dillon Kerr took a powerful shot that the keeper couldn’t control and for the second game in a row our right flank, Adam Hoult made the big run and put the game to bed with goal to the low far corner.  The defense stood strong all game and helped JoJo record his first clean sheet of the campaign.

MOTM: There were many folks under consideration for this, so MOTM goes to everyone this week. From the efforts both on and off the pitch, this was a massive 3 points away for us.

Matchday 2 Recap: @ Albania United

After some terrible weather keeping the boys from getting some extra outdoor training we visited new boys, Albania United for an 8am kickoff at Ceylon Park.  Although we fell 2-1 we had a good showing on a narrow field.  Right flanker, Adam Hoult was our lone goal scorer.  We had some late chances but Albania’s keeper was the hero.  All in all, it was a decent start to the new campaign.  Next week we face Holliston and look to exorcise our demons and finally take 3 points from our rival.

McGreevy’s Boys Fall A Little Short

SIFC made an impressive little run in the 6 a side indoor league going undefeated into the playoffs this past weekend. The boys showed good spirit and technical ability in the quarter final match to manage a fairly comfortable 1-0 win. In the semi-final, the boys put on a good show to rout the opposition. Unfortunately, tired legs and a strong Team Juan side proved a little too much in the Championship match. Team Juan scored early and was able to keep the foot on the gas until they got the second. SIFC showed grit to claw back into the game to make it 2-2, but a card for dissent put us down a man and Team Juan capitalized by putting in two more goals to seal the game, 4-2. Although the boys are disappointed not to take the preseason trophy, the larger objectives were achieved through improved fitness and chemistry between the players going into the BSSL 2017 campaign. We will look to enter another preseason tourny to continue improving and hopefully take home some silverware #WeGoAgain2017

The Boys Win 4/4 Heading Into Playoffs

Another solid outing yesterday in Revere. By far the dominant side in all areas. The most important area that continues to improve each week is our patience. The time of possession and composure on the ball will continue to speak volumes on how successful we can be this upcoming season.

MOTM: Dillon Kerr

Final Score: SIFC 16 – Team Rosa 3

Goal Scorers: Dill (4), DA (3), A-Woo / DiFronzo (2), CP / Leo / B-Woo / Faivre / Dan (1)

SIFC Ironman

Versatile and durable, Brian Woonton was the most capped member of McGreevy’s Boys appearing in all but one match during the 2016 regular season campaign. B-Woo’s presence provided the speed, skill, and consistency for the back line that SIFC needed to edge out crucial wins in the final stretch. The squad looks forward to another repeat performance from the stellar defender! #WeGoAgain2017

A-Woo Nets 3 vs. Team Juan

Another great result yesterday vs Team Juan at Teamworks Revere. Dominated possession, stayed composed on the ball and had some quality finishes. Cristian and B-Woo held it down in the back and Dan had a solid game in net as well.

MOTM this week goes to Andrew Woonton with the hat-trick!

Final result: SIFC 7 – Rosa 3

Goals: Andrew (3), Nicky (2), Leo (1), Dougie (1)
